Cabo del Sol, the Ocean Course: Another Jack Nicklaus design, this time on the coast of Baja, Mexico. The course opened in 1994 and gained immediate acclaim as one of the best public courses in North America. Mr. Nicklaus has called the 3 finishing holes the "finest in all of golf" and without doubt they are difficult. The 18th is especially taxing due to the narrow landing area and the left to right slope in the fairway, which always leaves a tenuous approach to the final green. The 17th and the 5th have been recognized by Golf Magazine (January 2000) as among the 500 greatest holes in the world. This is one course where the geography dictated some of the design characteristics. An example is the consecutive par 3's on the front, and too, the 18th finishing along the ocean and well away from the opening hole and club house.
