Mauna Kea: Located on the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea is a 7114 yard, Par 72 layout designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. on 170 acres surrounding the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Resort. It was built on rugged terrain of lava and reclaimed coral and has been referred to as severe-rolling-hogback. Whatever it is called, the course is long, tough and much hillier than others in the area. Nearly half of the holes play uphill and require an extra club-length Good play demands accurate, intelligently placed drives, followed by well judged irons to the greens. .Often there is more trouble in front of the putting surface than behind. Indeed, location can make all the difference. The greens, half of which surmount lava hills, are unforgiving especially when dry and hard. Controlling the roll and speed of the ball over multiple breaks and inclines, despite a master's touch, can be a nightmare. The astonishing beauty of the course can be distracting especially with all the sharp dog-legs, changes of elevation, blind shots and often swirling Tradewinds. Many are picture holes including the magnificent par-3 Third which requires a long tee shot over the naked, boiling blue water of the Pacific. Each side's concluding hole features a long downhill drive back toward picturesque panoramas of the ocean. With the incredible tropical beauty of Hawaii's flora and fauna contrasting with the jagged black roughness of volcanic lava Mauna Kea is as much a test of golfing ability as it is a lush garden of unsurpassed beauty. Over the years this course has maintained its popularity and it is consistently included among the best 100 courses in the world.
