Mission Hills Resort, Gary Player Course: If not for the color one might think, because of all the water, that this is a Florida course. No, this course is located in the golf course oasis of Rancho Mirage which is an ever expanding extension of Palm Springs, California. This was Gary Player's first desert course and opened in 1992. It is the North course of a 4 course complex that includes the famous Mission Hills course where the LPGA plays its first Major of the year. The other two courses were designed by Arnold Palmer and Pete Dye. Houses line many of the fairways (eliminated here) and to me are more fearful hazards than the water. I really hate hearing my slice ricocheting atop the ceramic roof tiles, not to mention going through someone's unsuspecting window. Otherwise this is a very enjoyable and challenging resort course. Since buying a time-share here in 2006 it, along with the Pete Dye course, which I have yet to play, is my home. The best I can say about my scores here is that I have played with some very nice and varied people and that the Course is managed by Troon Golf, the most gracious hosts in the business. As for the course there is much that is good, considering it is a resort course. What I don't understand is why create artificial water hazards when also enclosing fairways with hills to contain the golf ball? There are 4 very good par 3's on this course and the par-5, 7th and 17th are first rate fun to play. For me the best par-4 is the short 10th where the wide fairway invites a really big and free swing.
