Mission Hills Resort, Pete Dye Course: This track designed by the notoriously devilish Pete Dye has a completely different feel from that of the Gary Player course. Built in 1987 the entire layout is surrounded by houses and the Westin Mission Hills Hotel and Villas on the north and thus has no desert terrain in play or even visible. Located in Rancho Mirage, California, the only clue that this is a desert course is the adobe faced architecture and the ever present Santa Rosa mountains which form a dramatic backdrop to the lush greens of the well manicured facility. Despite its visual beauty this is a very tricked up course with hidden pin placements and hidden bunkers, drop offs, humps, bumps and blind shots galore. Local knowledge certainly helps, but often what looks like a perfect shot will deflect into an impossibly difficult recovery. The player can run up some very high numbers here with just one misjudged shot.
