Muirfield: Site of the 2002 British Open, which many champions have called the greatest test of golf in the world. No doubt the previous 14 British Opens held at this classic course assure the quality of the layout, which was "modernized" in 1912 by H.S. Colt and Tom Simpson, and attest to the course's longevity. Walter Hagen, after staying up all night playing cards before the final round, won that one. Other champions include none other than Gary Player (1959), Jack Nicklaus (1966), Lee Trevino (1972), Tom Watson (1980), Nick Faldo (1987) and (1992). Jack Nicklaus had so much respect for the course that he named his own home course after it. Muirfield is in Gullane, Scotland, not touching, but near the sea where the winds wreck the best intentions of the greatest shot-makers over rolling sandy terrain with truly punishing bunkers! Modifications to the course have been minimal over the last 10 years with adjustments to the par-3's (lengthening) most significant. If Tiger Woods extends his Majors streak to 3 here, he will have conquered three of the most challenging courses in modern times.
