Pasatiempo Golf Club: There are many classic as well as modern courses along the Monterey coastline, but Pasatiempo is special. It is a public course and has been since the revered Alister MacKenzie laid out the routing. Since 1929 this Santa Cruz course has stood the test of time and remains one of the great classic venues of the United States. By modern standards the course is short, but watch out! The fairways are narrow and the greens, though mostly large and generous, are slopped and fast. Beware of the dreaded and embarrassing 4-putt. Also watch the elevation changes and sloping fairways that make the course a thinking player's venue. How many courses have three par-3's with two par-5's on the front; with only one par-5 on the back and ending with a par-3? This is one of the unrecognized treasures in golf design, overlooked possibly by its relative proximity to Pebble Beach and the golfing "mecca" that exists along this enchanting and beautiful California coast.
