Poppy Hills: This is another California Monterey Peninsula course that is played for one round of the annual Pebble Beach Invitational. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and opened in 1986. Tom Doak, in his Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, says that "the 1st hole is one of the prettiest he's ever seen, spoiled only by the omission of a landing area for the tee shot". He also reports that the huge oversized greens slow down amateur play because it takes so long for golfers to read their putts. The course is routed tightly through lots of trees and some very rough terrain with lots of elevation changes and varying slopes in the fairways. Poppy Hills is the home of the Northern California Golf Association. It is rated 74.8 with a slope of 143.
