The Prince Course: On the northern shore of Island of Kauai in Hawaii is the Princeville Resort, where there are a total of 45 holes all designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Originally there were 27 holes, each nine designated by name, the Ocean, the Woods and the Lake courses and called collectively Princeville Makai. The routing of these nine's used only a portion of the 11,000 acre Princeville estate, which was named after a 2 year old Hawaiian Prince back in 1860. The courses were laid out over lava beds and accommodated the preservation of burial caves and other artifacts of ancient Hawaiian culture. Later in 1990, on the bluffs above where elevation changes are much more radical The Prince course opened to glowing praise; some ranking it as the best course in Hawaii. The routing winds through and around a deep densely vegetated stream, the Anini. The holes that encounter the stream have a very different, more intimate character than those that skirt the Anini on higher elevations, which creates welcome contrast and great variety throughout play.
