Cambrian Ridge: None of the R. T. Jones Golf Trail courses are easy, especially from the tips, but this is one tough test, even from the front tees. Length, elevation changes and sloping fairways to greens surrounded by deep Bermuda rough make for one of the toughest circuits of golf on the planet. The 36-hole complex is located 40 miles south of Montgomery in Greenville, Alabama and after it opened in 1994 was recognized by Golf Digest as the 3rd best new public course in America and 13th among the top 50 most affordable courses. This map represents the Sherling and the Canyon Courses. There is another nine, the Loblolly Course, par 35, as well as the Short Course, par 27. The Sherling nine has been called the best nine of all the RTJ Trail courses. It begins with a long downhill par 5 and ends at the 9th with a steep march up and over a deep boulder-filled ravine to a narrow boomerang shaped green that is also home to the Canyon 9th. The Canyon nine descends 200 feet from the opening tee and then winds its way through former hunting grounds. It is target style golf here, where deer blinds remain nailed to hardwood along the routing as a metaphor for the challenge of times past and present.
