Winged Foot, West Course: In 1923 A.W. Tillinghast was asked to build a "man-sized course" on rather bland rolling farmland in Mamaroneck, New York. What resulted were two courses, the West and the East, both of which Tillinghast called his greatest achievements in course design. The famed West course has hosted four U.S. Opens in 1929, 1959, 1974 and 1984. The PGA Championship was played here in 1997 and the course will again host the U.S. Open in 2006. That event will see a course that has been narrowed and lengthened over 300 yards since Davis Love III won the PGA here.
